State of the Union 2024: Biden makes second-longest speech of his term

President Joe Biden spoke for an hour and nine minutes during the State of the Union speech, his second-longest address to Congress so far.

The length of his speech was a topic of interest because of questions surrounding Biden’s age and mental acuity.

Biden tends to make shorter speeches in general, and recent controversies surrounding his memory meant the sheer length of his remarks was closely monitored. He spoke mainly from a teleprompter during the State of the Union and sparred vigorously with Republicans in the chamber while making a few gaffes.

The length of annual speeches has varied considerably over the years, with President Richard Nixon speaking for less than 29 minutes in 1972 and Bill Clinton going for nearly an hour and a half in 1995 and 2000.
