Shots rang out Saturday evening during a crowded community celebration in Toledo, Ohio, leaving multiple people injured and sending law enforcement into an urgent manhunt for those responsible.
Toledo police converged on the Old West End Festival around 5:30pm after receiving reports of gunfire. Officers discovered several victims at the scene and quickly transported them to nearby hospitals. Police declined to specify how many people were shot or the severity of injuries, saying only that "many victims" had been taken to medical facilities.
Investigators had not yet identified or located the shooters as of the police statement, nor had they disclosed any apparent motive for the attack.
Kevin Berry was seated in the neighborhood arboretum enjoying live music with friends when the violence erupted. "Everybody hit the deck," he recalled of the moment gunshots pierced the festive atmosphere. Within seconds, he witnessed a firearm discarded on the ground less than 50 feet away. Police officers stationed at the festival for security responded immediately.
Berry, who has medical training from his service in the U.S. Navy, moved through the area to assess who might need assistance. He counted at least five people with gunshot wounds scattered across the arboretum grounds.
The Old West End Festival draws large crowds to Toledo's historic district each year with a two-day program featuring live performances, food vendors, home tours and retail shops. Berry had described it as the traditional launching event for the city's busy summer festival calendar.
Author James Rodriguez: "A festival meant to kick off the summer season instead became a crime scene, and the fact that armed officers were already on site and still couldn't prevent multiple shootings raises hard questions about security planning at large public gatherings."
