Star Trek is venturing into shadowy territory with Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a mature psychological thriller unveiled at IGN Live 2026. The single-player action game from Bloober Team, the studio behind Silent Hill's remake and the horror titles Layers of Fear and Observer, centers on the beloved Next Generation character Ro Laren, with Michelle Forbes reprising the role as voice actress.
Ro finds herself marooned on an uncharted planet scattered with the wreckage of countless starships. What initially appears to be a rescue opportunity becomes something far more sinister as she uncovers the truth behind the graveyard of vessels and discovers why she was lured there in the first place.
The game marks a deliberate tonal departure for the Star Trek universe. Paramount Games Studio's Shawn Kittelsen framed Shadow Frontier as a vehicle for exploring Ro's internal demons rather than delivering traditional Trek optimism. "This story will delve deep into Ro Laren and her personal conflicts and really bring things out," Kittelsen said. "That's where the darkness comes from." The narrative digs into her past decisions and their lingering consequences, with Bloober Team Head of Publishing MichaĆ Gembicki describing it as heavy on "dealing with the skeletons in her closet."
Players will navigate the mysterious planet equipped with familiar Star Trek equipment, including phasers and tricorders, while unraveling environmental mysteries and discovering Easter eggs woven throughout the experience. Kittelsen emphasized that this doesn't feel like any Star Trek game that has come before, positioning it as a genuine AAA entry for the franchise. "If you've been waiting for a AAA Star Trek game, congratulations you're getting one," he said. "And hopefully this is the first of many."
Bloober Team, known for embracing dark storytelling in titles like The Medium and Cronos: The New Dawn, saw Shadow Frontier as an ideal marriage of their sensibilities with Star Trek's expansive universe. Gembicki noted that "a combination of horror and dark storytelling mixed with such an amazing IP as Star Trek would be just such a great match."
The game is being designed to welcome newcomers unfamiliar with Ro's character arc from the 1990s television series. Kittelsen expressed confidence in Forbes' performance, saying, "If this is your first time meeting Ro Laren, you will walk away loving her and want to know more." The developers remain tight-lipped about the game's specific timeline placement within Star Trek canon, but have confirmed it will launch on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2027.
Author Emily Chen: "Bloober Team's decision to go psychological with a beloved Trek character is either the smartest creative risk in the franchise or a cautionary tale waiting to happen, but Forbes returning to voice Ro makes it worth watching closely."
