Cyberpunk 2077 Gets Massive PS5 Pro Overhaul Tomorrow

CD Projekt Red is rolling out a substantial update for Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro starting April 8, marking the most significant visual upgrade for the console version since the game's infamous 2020 launch.

The update introduces three distinct performance modes tailored to the PS5 Pro's capabilities. Ray Tracing Pro represents the flagship option, leveraging the console's enhanced hardware to deliver improved graphics while maintaining a 30-40 fps target. The mode employs a new "BVH8" ray tracing system that tracks up to eight light rays simultaneously, resulting in more sophisticated reflections, shadows, and global illumination effects.

A standard Ray Tracing mode will sit in the middle, aiming for a consistent 60 fps experience. Performance mode prioritizes frame rates above all else, though CD Projekt Red has provided minimal detail on its visual trade-offs.

The Ray Tracing Pro implementation doesn't quite match PC's Ray Tracing Overdrive preset, but it should bring the PS5 Pro closer to PC's Ray Tracing Ultra settings. This represents a significant step forward for a game that launched on consoles well behind its PC counterpart.

CD Projekt Red first teased a PSSR 2 update last month before announcing this dedicated PS5 Pro enhancement. The preview images on the company's blog suggest the visual improvements are substantial, though the full impact won't be clear until the patch goes live.

The update underscores the PS5 Pro's capabilities nearly a year after its 2024 launch. Whether CDPR has successfully brought the console version close to PC quality remains to be seen, but early indicators suggest the effort could validate the premium console's raw power and the potential of PSSR 2 upscaling technology moving forward.
