Overwatch Scraps 'Baby Face' After Outcry; Anran Gets Fierce Redesign

Blizzard has rolled out a significant visual overhaul for Anran, one of Overwatch's newest damage heroes, scrapping her original softer appearance in favor of a harder-edged look that better matches her personality as a confident, determined leader.

The redesign comes after sustained community criticism and pushback from the hero's voice actor, Fareeha, who publicly declared the issue "a hill worth dying on" when players pointed out that Anran fell victim to what fans call "Same Face Syndrome." The complaint centered on a pattern across the female roster, with Brigitte, Tracer, Kiriko, Juno, and others all sharing nearly identical facial features.

In a video announcement, game director Aaron Keller explained the creative rationale behind the changes. "We want our heroes to feel unique, but we also want their visuals to match their personality, and we feel like we didn't quite land that when Anran first released," he said.

The adjustments targeted Anran's eyes, eyebrows, and mouth specifically. Keller described the shift as moving "away from that baby face look and expression to something more sincere and more mature." He noted that even subtle changes like posture adjustments contributed to making her feel truer to her character.

Keller also highlighted that the updated look now carries a closer resemblance to Anran's brother Wuyang, adding another layer of visual cohesion to her character design.

Fareeha responded enthusiastically to the changes, posting on social media that she was "so grateful" for the update, calling the new appearance "much more like the strong older sibling we knew her to be." She later praised the team's execution within technical constraints, describing Anran's new look as "striking."

Blizzard indicated the process has broader implications. With five additional heroes scheduled for release this year, Keller emphasized that lessons learned from Anran's redesign will shape the entire pipeline. "Going through this process has really helped the team dial in this next set of heroes," he stated, while encouraging players to continue providing feedback.

The redesigned Anran appears just as Overwatch enters a new chapter following its rebranding from Overwatch 2. The franchise is launching into what the studio describes as a "story-driven era" with a year-long narrative arc, beginning with Season 1 in February. Season 2 kicks off April 14, with another new hero fully revealed April 8.
