Starfield Explodes with 'Biggest Update Yet': Free Planet Travel, PS5 Launch, New DLC

Bethesda Game Studios rolled out what it's calling the most substantial content delivery in Starfield's history today, bundling a massive free update, a paid story expansion, and the long-awaited PlayStation 5 port into a single coordinated launch.

Version 1.16.236 goes live across all platforms at no cost, introducing the Free Lanes update that fundamentally reshapes how players move through the game's universe. The centerpiece feature lets players cruise freely between planets within a star system, eliminating what had been a significant friction point since the game's September 2023 debut.

The update spans nearly 30 major additions and fixes. A new Cruise Mode drives interplanetary travel, while fresh space encounters and locations flesh out the Settled Systems. The Moon Jumper becomes the game's newest land vehicle, and a Database system helps players track locations, resources, and recipes based on accumulated knowledge.

Ship and outpost systems received substantial attention. A new buildable Ship Optimization Terminal lets players spend X-Tech currency to boost various vessel attributes. Outposts now feature a Shared Container system that lets inventory sync across multiple bases, production rate displays, and more precise placement tools. The Quantum Entanglement Device allows item transfers when traveling through the Unity portal mechanic.

Weapon and armor customization expanded dramatically. X-Tech crafting support arrived for both categories, introducing additional quality tiers and Rank 4 legendary effects alongside a fresh batch of upgrade modules and weapon skins. A new Château des Étoiles player house and crew member Muria Siarkiewicz round out the creature comforts.

The patch addresses a lengthy list of bugs across quests, locations, and UI systems. Players can finally jump while reloading specific pistols. Quest progression issues in several storylines got resolved, including problems with the Terrormorph data in Friends Like These and a control lock situation in Two Tales, Two Cities. Weapon workbench placement difficulties on ships and houses received fixes, as did various visual glitches in Photo Mode.

Beyond the free update, Bethesda is launching Terran Armada, a story expansion priced at $10 that brings new locations and weapons as players confront the robotic Terran Armada faction.

Today marks a critical inflection point for Starfield since its launch nearly three years ago. The game launched to strong initial numbers but failed to sustain player engagement at the scale Bethesda's executives had anticipated. Creative director Todd Howard acknowledged the criticism in May 2024, noting that many players expected another Elder Scrolls or Fallout experience and got something fundamentally different instead.

"There are areas that the maps or some other things, gameplay options, that we're adding, other display modes on console that people have asked for, and we want to do all that stuff. It takes some time but we're excited to get stuff out there," Howard said at the time.

The PS5 version represents a major push to attract new audiences to the space RPG. Combined with the substantial Free Lanes improvements and Terran Armada narrative content, Bethesda is making a clear bet that these additions can reconvene lapsed players while convincing newcomers that the game is worth their time.
