A New York City Police Department officer was killed during a traffic stop in Queens on Monday night, marking the first death of an on-duty NYPD officer in two years.
NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller was shot in the abdomen, below his bulletproof vest, and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died, authorities said. The suspect, 34-year-old Guy Rivera, was also shot and taken to the hospital but is expected to survive.
Diller had approached a car that was parked illegally at a bus stop at about 6 p.m. with a fellow NYPD officer. Two men were in the vehicle at the time, but Rivera got out of the car with a gun and shot Diller. The other officer fired back, striking the suspect in the back, according to NBC News.
