NYC Mayor Eric Adams says increased subway security is ‘the new norm’

New York City Mayor Eric Adams anticipates continuing to have the National Guard stationed throughout the city’s subway system for the foreseeable future.

The city is a week into its deployment of the National Guard, state troopers, and NYPD officers performing security operations and bag checks. This came as a result of police data on subway crime reporting it is up 13% compared to 2023, with assaults in particular up 11%.

Already, crime has fallen, according to Adams, who appeared on WABC-TV on Friday. As a result, Adams claimed the practice will continue.

“I am saying to the team, we have to now look at what’s the new norm and we have to police to that new norm,” Adams said.
