Nintendo Switch 2 owners will finally get their chance to hunt monsters. Capcom confirmed Monday that Monster Hunter Wilds is in active development for the Japanese company's next-generation console, marking the franchise's return to Nintendo hardware.
The announcement came via a brief post on X, where Capcom stated the game is "currently in development for Nintendo Switch 2" and promised additional details including a release date would arrive at a later time. The declaration arrived just hours after Summer Game Fest 2026 wrapped up.
Monster Hunter Wilds launched in February 2025 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but skipped the original Nintendo Switch despite the handheld's longtime connection to the franchise. The timing made strategic sense: the game released late in the Switch's lifecycle, before the Switch 2's unveiling. Nintendo's hybrid consoles have hosted numerous Monster Hunter titles over the years, so a Switch 2 version was widely anticipated by the fanbase.
Capcom had bigger news to unveil at Summer Game Fest itself. The publisher revealed an upcoming expansion called Ascendance, which will introduce new hunting grounds and combat abilities to the game. That content arrives sometime in 2027 for the existing PC and console versions.
The publisher has not yet detailed how the Switch 2 release will compare to other platforms, whether that means graphical adjustments, performance differences, or timing relative to other versions. With only a vague promise of future updates, players remain in the dark about when the Switch 2 version will actually launch.
Monster Hunter Wilds earned solid marks from reviewers, scoring an 8/10 on launch. The franchise has proven durable across multiple Nintendo systems, and a Switch 2 port ensures the action-RPG can reach a new audience when Nintendo's console finally releases.
Author Emily Chen: "Capcom playing it coy on the details is frustrating, but getting Monster Hunter back on Nintendo hardware is the right call."
