Shift Up Acquires Shinji Mikami's Unbound Studio, Plans Major Original Game

Shift Up, the South Korean developer behind the successful action title Stellar Blade, has acquired Unbound, the independent studio founded by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. The deal includes publishing rights for Unbound's upcoming projects.

Mikami established Unbound in 2022 after departing Tango Gameworks, the studio Microsoft shuttered before PUBG owner Krafton acquired and relaunched it. The new venture has remained private and unreleased until now, with Mikami keeping its work confidential.

In an announcement video, Mikami disclosed he is developing "a fairly large game" and emphasized his commitment to the partnership. "I've come to see my vision and ideals more clearly, and I don't think I've ever been in a situation where, as a creator, our wavelengths and direction align this closely," he said. He added that this marks the first time in years he will be fully present on-site during production of a major project.

Mikami's design legacy spans multiple franchises, including Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis, and The Evil Within, alongside his foundational work on the Resident Evil series.

Shift Up stated that Unbound is currently developing "original PC and console-based IPs targeting the global market." The company intends to directly publish Unbound's titles and expand its own global publishing capabilities over time.

The acquisition reflects Shift Up's expanding reach following Stellar Blade's strong performance in 2024, which sold over 3 million copies. A sequel is already in development. The studio is also working on Project Spirits, to be published by Level Infinite.

Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim framed the deal as a strategic move. "I find it deeply meaningful to join forces with Unbound, which brings together a world-class development team led by CEO Shinji Mikami," he said. "This acquisition will serve as an opportunity to deliver the best gaming experience to users worldwide and further solidify Shift Up's global development competitiveness."

The move underscores the rising momentum of Korean game studios on the global stage. Earlier this year, Pearl Abyss' Crimson Desert became a cultural phenomenon, selling 4 million copies within two weeks of launch. Kim himself received the Presidential Commendation at South Korea's Content Awards for his contributions to the industry, credited with elevating titles like Goddess of Victory: Nikke and Stellar Blade internationally.
