Louisiana banning prop bets on college athletes after NCAA pleas

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board announced that proposition bets on college athletes will be banned in the fall after the NCAA called on states to restrict bets on their athletes’ performances.

Proposition bets, more commonly known as prop bets, are when a wager is made on how an individual athlete will perform, such as betting a player will score more than seven points, or if something will occur during a game. The order from the state board will go into effect on Aug. 1 at 8 a.m. local time, with the state joining Maryland, Ohio, and Vermont, among others, in banning the bets.
