GOP strategists say Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) are vulnerable with House Speaker Mike Johnson (D-LA) planning to present Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) with two articles of impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas when Congress returns from recess.
A vote against the articles of impeachment would anger a strong base of conservative constituents.
Polls showed that immigration is voters’ top concern this election cycle, and both Tester and Brown live in states Trump won in 2020.
“They’re caught between their base and what the majority of their state wants,” a Senate GOP strategist told the Hill. “I would say it’s the biggest threat to Sherrod Brown and Jon Tester, specifically. It’s a really, really bad issue for them.”
