Double trouble: Billions of cicadas are set to emerge this spring from a rare double brood

The emergence of two cicada broods this spring will make 2024 an extra noisy year.

This occurrence of two broods hasn’t happened in 221 years, which was 1803 when Thomas Jefferson was president. The next double broods will not occur again until 2245.

Brood XIX will emerge in 14 states in Southwest and Midwest states after 13 years. This brood will be seen and heard in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

At the same time, Brood XIII will emerge in Midwestern states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

When soil temperatures reach about 64 degrees, the emergence of periodical broods will begin to emerge for the spring. and are estimated to be seen starting in mid-May through late June.
