San Francisco Elections Commission blasted for appointment of noncitizen from China

Chinese immigrant Kelly Wong became the first noncitizen appointed to California‘s San Francisco Elections Commission last week, and the decision has received criticism.

The Hong Kong immigrant came to the United States in 2019, and a year later, San Francisco voters passed a measure to remove the citizenship requirement to serve on city boards and advisory bodies.

Kelly Wong is not a citizen of the United States.

She was just appointed to the San Francisco Elections Commission.

The Board of Supervisors in San Francisco unanimously voted Wong into her position. She has said she hopes to use her position to inform more immigrants about the voting process.
