The United States has proposed a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for a temporary ceasefire in the Israel–Hamas conflict and opposing an Israeli ground offensive in southern Gaza.
The resolution comes just days after President Joe Biden, typically a strong supporter of Israel, called for a temporary ceasefire to get prisoners and hostages out of Gaza.
Washington leaders have mostly avoided the term “ceasefire” in actions related to the conflict, but the draft language reflects what Biden said he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week. Reuters reported the news.
