President Joe Biden heartily criticized former President Donald Trump Friday at the White House for suggesting that Russia be allowed to invade NATO countries should they not meet their minimum defense spending benchmarks.
Trump, the likely 2024 Republican presidential nominee, has recently told supporters that he would recommend the United States not come to the aid of any countries invaded by another nation unless those allies meet the 2% GDP defense spending commitments. Currently, roughly only half of NATO signatories fall under that category.
“We have to realize what we’re dealing with, with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. All of us should reject the dangerous statements made by the previous president that invited Russia to invade our NATO allies if they weren’t paying up,” Biden said in remarks responding to the death of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
