As Nintendo's Mario cinematic universe expands with this week's release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, actor Charlie Day has signaled enthusiasm for bringing another beloved Nintendo property to the big screen: Luigi's Mansion.
Day, who voices Luigi in the Mario films, told Screenrant he would jump at the chance to reprise the role for a Luigi's Mansion adaptation. "I would be thrilled to do Luigi's Mansion, just because it's such a fun game," he said.
The actor suggested the project could lean into the spooky atmosphere of the source material without becoming a full horror experience. "Not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids, but it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun," Day explained, before acknowledging the film's broader appeal. "It does seem like it would make a great movie."
While Day expressed eagerness to participate, he was candid about the limits of his influence over studio decisions. "They don't put me in charge of movie studios and for good reason," he said. "I got no idea. I wouldn't want the [studio boss] job, personally. Don't give me that."
A Franchise With Options
The Luigi's Mansion concept has circulated in industry conversations before. In 2023, Mario voice actor Chris Pratt mentioned that "talk of Luigi's Mansion" had taken place regarding potential directions for the film series, though Nintendo ultimately chose to chart a course toward space with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie instead.
The GameCube classic and its subsequent sequels have built a dedicated following, making the property a natural candidate for cinematic expansion as Nintendo assembles its growing roster of characters on screen. The Galaxy film will introduce new characters to audiences, including space princess Rosalina, alongside confirmed appearances from Star Fox, Pikmin, and ROB—expanding the company's cinematic footprint well beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.
Still, a Luigi's Mansion film remains speculative. Other Nintendo properties may take priority. A trademark for an unannounced Donkey Kong movie surfaced last summer, raising questions about whether the character will receive his own standalone picture rather than appear in future Mario sequels. Seth Rogen voiced Donkey Kong in the original Super Mario Movie, but his absence from announcements regarding the Galaxy film has fueled speculation that the character is being reserved for a separate project.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters April 1, with further studio announcements likely to clarify Nintendo's near-term film slate.
