House GOP Advances Alternative DHS Funding Plan, Rejecting Senate Compromise

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives pushed through its own temporary funding package for the Department of Homeland Security on Friday evening, spurning a bipartisan Senate proposal and perpetuating an ongoing fiscal dispute that has created widespread disruptions to air travel.

The measure, which would supply complete funding to the DHS for the next two months, cleared the chamber with 213 votes in favor and 203 opposed. House Republicans took this action after declining to endorse the Senate agreement, which contained provisions that would have withheld appropriations from Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and border protection initiatives.

The competing proposals have kept budget negotiations at an impasse for several weeks, resulting in operational complications across the aviation sector as the funding crisis continues to remain unresolved.
