Federal health authorities have identified a connection between a California-based raw milk dairy operation and an emerging foodborne illness crisis centered on contaminated cheddar cheese products. The outbreak has crossed state lines, with confirmed cases documented across three separate states.
Raw Farm, the dairy in question, has now become the focus of multiple food safety investigations within a relatively short timespan. The company was previously implicated in a 2024 salmonella contamination incident that resulted in illness affecting 165 individuals. Additionally, the operation has been linked to a separate incident involving avian influenza transmission to felines at the facility, resulting in fatalities.
According to a public health alert issued by the FDA, the current E. coli outbreak has sickened nine individuals to date. The demographic composition of affected patients reveals a troubling pattern: more than half are young children below the age of five, indicating heightened vulnerability among the youngest consumers.
Three patients have required hospitalization due to infection with O157:H7, a particularly virulent strain of E. coli known for severe complications. One hospitalized individual has progressed to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition characterized by red blood cell destruction and potential kidney damage that can prove life-threatening without appropriate medical intervention.
