Astarion Actor Neil Newbon Seeks Creative Growth Beyond Vampire Rogue, Inspired by Bowie's Constant Reinvention

Neil Newbon's portrayal of Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3 stands as one of the game's most celebrated vocal performances, joining an impressive ensemble of talented voice actors. While the actor takes justified pride in his acclaimed work, he has adopted a philosophy of artistic evolution that prevents him from simply repeating the same character type indefinitely.

During a recent conversation with FRVR, Newbon revealed that musical icon David Bowie, alongside punk legend Iggy Pop, shaped his artistic sensibilities from an early age. He expressed enthusiasm about potentially embodying Bowie in future projects, specifically mentioning aspirations to tackle the role of Jareth in a fresh Labyrinth adaptation or to chronicle the music legend's life on screen.

The actor has internalized a crucial lesson from Bowie's decades-spanning career: the dangers of creative stagnation through repetition. Newbon emphasized that sustained artistic growth demands deliberately pushing oneself into uncomfortable creative territory. He admired Bowie's willingness to constantly experiment with new directions, acknowledging that not every artistic venture succeeded but celebrating the relentless pursuit of novelty.

Newbon disclosed that industry representatives have repeatedly approached him with roles closely resembling Astarion's character archetype. Rather than accept these offers, he has deliberately sidestepped projects where casting directors essentially sought "Astarion 2.0." He explained his reasoning: reprising similar character beats would prevent him from bringing fresh interpretations or meaningful contributions to new roles.

Since making this commitment to diversification, Newbon has accumulated an eclectic range of projects showcasing marked departures from his Baldur's Gate 3 character. His recent credits include voicing Drysdale in Date Everything!, wielding an umbrella as Lumacchio in the Lies of P expansion, and leading the cast as protagonist Chase Lowry in Dead Take.

However, Newbon indicated openness toward eventually reprising the vampire rogue should the opportunity arise organically. Following HBO's announcement regarding a Baldur's Gate 3 television adaptation that would extend the game's narrative beyond its conclusion, possibilities for returning cast members have emerged. The project's showrunner, Craig Manzin from the acclaimed The Last of Us television series, signaled intentions to collaborate with original game performers to determine optimal methods for continuing their character arcs on screen. Whether such collaboration materializes for Newbon remains uncertain, though the prospect remains tantalizing for devoted fans.
