Virginia certifies Bob Good primary loss with recount on the way

State Sen. John McGuire has been certified as the winner of the GOP primary for House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good’s (R-VA) seat, even as Good vows to request a recount in the coming days.

Officials with the Virginia Department of Elections certified the results on Tuesday, showing McGuire with a 0.6-percentage-point lead over Good in the state’s 5th Congressional District primary and defeating the incumbent by just 374 votes. The announcement brings the Republican Party one step closer to resolving a monthslong saga that split House conservatives, resulting in a feud between Good and several of his Republican colleagues. 

Under state law, Good has 10 days to request a recount because the margin of victory is under 1 point — a move his campaign has vowed to do.
