The International Skating Union announced on Tuesday the United States would be elevated to the gold medal in the team figure skating event for the 2022 Winter Olympics after Russian skater Kamila Valieva was disqualified for doping violations.
The ISU’s amended results come a day after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Valieva would be ineligible for events for four years following her positive test for trimetazidine on Dec. 25, 2021, including the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, in February 2022. With Valieva’s disqualification, the U.S. moves to first place, Japan moves to second place, and the Russian Olympic Committee drops from first place to third place.
U.S. Figure Skating celebrated the decision late Monday, ahead of the announcement, saying it is “extremely proud” of its skaters’ “excellence on and off the ice.” The graphic also
