Illinois announced that an infant has died after testing positive for COVID-19, the first such instance in the United States.
The death was revealed by the Illinois Department of Public Health on Saturday. Ngozi Ezike, director of the department, said an investigation into the child’s death will be conducted.
“There has never before been a death associated with COVID-19 in an infant. A full investigation is underway to determine the cause of death,” Ezike said. “We must do everything we can to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. If not to protect ourselves, but to protect those around us.”
