Illegal immigrant with multiple convictions avoiding ICE deportation by living in ‘sanctuary church’

An illegal immigrant with alleged gang ties and multiple criminal convictions who has lived in the United States for 20 years is avoiding deportation by living in a “sanctuary church.”

Mexican national Jorge Avila, 31, is facing final deportation orders from Immigration and Customs Enforcement but has avoided that order by living in a church.

Avila was supposed to attend a “check-in” with ICE in December, but, instead, he went to Park Hill United Methodist Church in Denver and took up residence there. ICE’s policy of not apprehending criminals and fugitives inside “sensitive locations” has inspired Avila and other illegal immigrants to seek shelter there.
