MADRID (AP) — The Spanish league says it will seek a partial stadium closure for Espanyol after an opposition player suffered racist verbal abuse from some of its fans.
The league has condemned the monkey noises directed at Athletic Bilbao player Iñaki Williams on Saturday. It said Sunday it will raise the incident with the Spanish football federation’s competition committee, which handles disciplinary issues.
The league added that it will attempt to identify the fans who verbally abused Williams during the game at Espanyol’s stadium in Barcelona and seek to press legal charges against them.
Williams, who is black, played 82 minutes of the 1-1 draw before being substituted.
