‘We don’t like it’: State Department doesn’t want Erik Prince and Rudy Giuliani talking to Venezuela

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo doesn’t want private U.S. citizens doing freelance diplomacy with Caracas, according to the State Department’s lead negotiator for the crisis in Venezuela.

“I’m always concerned when any American goes to Caracas and talks to regime officials, because there is always the possibility of a misunderstanding,” Elliott Abrams, the special representative for Venezuela, told the Washington Examiner. “So, we don’t like it.”

Abrams made his comments following reports that Erik Prince, the former Blackwater CEO and brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, held secret talks with a Venezuelan official in November and that Rudy Giuliani had a private phone call with Venezuelan
