Several Katyusha rockets landed in the Green Zone surrounding the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Sunday.
The Green Zone, which is a fortified buffer surrounding the embassy, was hit with three blasts, according to Reuters. Alarms sounded ahead of the explosions, and no casualties were immediately reported. The reported blasts followed a week of escalated tensions after President Trump ordered a drone strike killing Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
Prior to Soleimani’s death, Iranian-backed militias had been targeting U.S. assets in Iraq, killing one American contractor and injuring four servicemen. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was also recently the target of an attempted takeover,
