Iowa teacher resigns after ‘sniper rifle’ threat against Greta Thunberg

An Iowa teacher resigned after he responded to an article on Facebook about Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg visiting Iowa City by posting “Dont [sic] have my sniper rifle.”

“The Waterloo Schools employee put on administrative leave due to a social media post has resigned effective immediately,” a spokesperson for the Waterloo Community School District said in a statement obtained by the Des Moines Register about science teacher Matt Baish. “West High School and the District are working to ensure classroom instruction continues for courses impacted by the departure.”

Baish, who taught at Waterloo West High, deleted his comment, but a screenshot appeared on the school district’s Facebook page.

The school’s social media policy prohibits any content that “would be defined by a reasonable person as obscene.”

Police Lt. Kyle Richter said that Waterloo authorities are investigating the situation.

The 16-year-old Thunberg was in Iowa City Friday along with 3,000 climate activists to demand the city sign onto a “Town-Gown Climate Accord.”

“We teenagers and children shouldn’t have to take the responsibility but right now the world leaders keep acting like children and someone needs to be the adult in the room,” she said at the rally.
