Giants Throw Daniel Jones to the Wolves (a.k.a. the Patriots)

The rest of Week 6’s game previews will be published on Friday.

Giants at Patriots, 8:20 p.m. Thursday, Fox and NFL Network

Line: Patriots -17 | Total: 41

A comprehensive list of every first- and second-year quarterback who has won a regular-season game against the Patriots (5-0) in New England since Tom Brady took over as the team’s quarterback in 2001: Colin Kaepernick on Dec. 16, 2012.

If you expand into the playoffs, you can add two more names: Joe Flacco (wild-card game following the 2009 season) and Mark Sanchez (divisional-round game following the 2010 season), though Flacco should take only partial credit as he threw for just 34 yards in a game won by Baltimore’s defense.

The other 38 times the Patriots won.

Does that mean Daniel Jones and the Giants (2-3) have no chance? Well, probably.

It does not help that the Giants will be without Saquon Barkley (ankle), Wayne Gallman (concussion), Evan Engram (knee) and Sterling Shepard (concussion), leaving them remarkably short-handed against the N.F.L.’s top-rated defense in yards allowed (238.4), points allowed (6.8) and interceptions (11).

The Giants happen to have a veteran quarterback on their bench who knows a thing or two about beating the Patriots in big games, but letting Jones — who has been far less sharp in his second and third starts than he was in his first — get an up-close look at the best the N.F.L. has to offer will probably be a good thing in the long run, provided his confidence can survive. Pick: Patriots -17
