A white supremacist who drove his car at a crowd of anti-racism protesters, killing a woman and injuring 19 other people, has apologised as he was jailed for life.
James Alex Fields Jr was sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty to hate crime charges following the deadly car attack during a white nationalist rally in Virginia.
He apologised before the judge jailed him and he will be sentenced next month on separate state charges.
The Unite The Right rally in 2017 drew hundreds of white nationalists to Charlottesville to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
Fields admitted deliberately driving his car into counter-protesters who showed up to demonstrate against the white nationalists.
The case stirred racial tensions around the country.
