A man has died after setting himself on fire in a park close to the White House.
Arnav Gupta, 33, was engulfed in flames on Wednesday in the Ellipse, which is between the White House and the Washington Monument.
Secret Service agents responded and extinguished the flames.
Mr Gupta was taken to hospital and died later that day, US Park Police said.
Police from Montgomery County in Maryland said officers were concerned for his welfare and had been looking for him.
Mr Gupta was last seen alive when he left his home in the Bethesda area on Wednesday morning.
Washington DC police have taken over the investigation from their Park Police colleagues.
In another recent incident, a man in a mobility scooter was taken to hospital after he set light to his jacket outside the White House fence.
