A man has pleaded guilty to throwing a five-year-old boy from the third floor of a shopping centre.
The child broke multiple bones and suffered head injuries but survived the 12m (40ft) fall from the balcony at the Mall of America in Minnesota.
Emmanuel Aranda, 24, admitted attempted premeditated first-degree murder and faces 19 years in jail.
Aranda had gone to the mall on 12 April this year “looking for someone to kill” and chose the boy at random, authorities said.
He only gave yes or no answers on whether he knew what he was admitting to during Tuesday’s court appearance in Minneapolis.
The boy’s family has said he is no longer in a critical condition and continues to recover.
More than $1m (£774,000) has been donated online to help with his medical bills and rehabilitation costs.
His fundraising page says: “The family doesn’t know him [the attacker] and are completely clueless as to why this monster would target their family with this heinous act of violence.”
It says the victim has “many surgeries ahead in his life to try to get back to a normal life for a young, vibrant boy”.
Aranda’s guilty plea was part of a deal with prosecutors to avoid a potential extra year in prison over an aggravated circumstances element to the crime.
