MILAN (AP) — Roma moved into the Champions League qualifying places after seeing off Cagliari 3-0 in Serie A on Saturday.
The capital side was 2-0 up within eight minutes thanks to Federico Fazio and Javier Pastore. Aleksandar Kolarov added a third late on.
Roma moved to fourth, two points above AC Milan and Atalanta, which play Torino and Udinese respectively, later in the weekend.
Claudio Ranieri’s team is also just three points behind third-placed Inter Milan, which hosted newly crowned league champion Juventus late.
Roma made a great start when Fazio’s looping header from a corner bounced off the inside of the far post in the fifth minute, confirmed by goal-line technology.
Pastore doubled Roma’s lead three minutes later when he was left unmarked to fire Justin Kluivert’s cross into the bottom right corner.
Cagliari, safe in mid table, had little to play for and Roma had more chances only to hit the woodwork twice.
It did get a third four minutes from time. Alessio Cragno pulled off another fine save to deny Diego Perotti, but Kolarov drilled in the rebound.
Bologna took a crucial step to avoiding relegation by beating fellow struggler Empoli 3-1.
Marko Pajac gave Empoli a first-half lead but Roberto Soriano leveled in the 51st and Riccardo Orsolini and Nicola Sansone sealed the match late on.
Empoli remained in the relegation zone, four points from safety, while Bologna moved eight points above the bottom three.
There were four rounds remaining.
